Phu Quoc

It is an island of the coast of Vietnam but is closer to Cambodia with a population of 100,000.  There are currently no major resorts there however that is changing, it is trying to become the next Phuket.  We flew there and stayed three nights.

I was surprised by how many Europeans there were there.  The island grows peppercorns, cultivates pearls and is known for its seafood.  I however had a bout of food poisoning and had managed to throw up in the taxi and plane so I stayed clear of this food group.

The sun sets were amazing and it reminded me of Kona, Hawaii and the water was just as warm.

We hired a motorbike and explored the island:

  • Coconut Prison.  Was established during the French regime and was used in the Vietnam War to hold the North Vietnamese.  The South Vietnamese soldiers were called American puppet soldiers according to the written explanations in the prison.
  • Jungle walk
  • Peppercorn plantation visit
  • Swimming

It was sad to see the development that was going on and the amount of rubbish on the island.

The airport had recently been built and was very efficient.  When we checked in to head back to the mainland we were asked the normal questions; did you pack your bags, any dangerous goods and are you carrying Fish Sauce.  I looked at Niels and then asked, did you just say Fish Sauce?  She said yes and I asked if it was a dangerous good?  No, however, we have had instances where the fish sauce has broken in luggage and made a huge mess and smell.  Another item to add to the no fly list!

MTB experience & Shrek

A girl can never have too many bikes, so I am introducing Shrek:

It is impossible to get a soft tail bike here and it has 27.5″ wheels, as it is very hard to get 29″ like in Australia, however, the small frame was available!

It is hard to believe you can find open spaces in Ho Chi Minh City, but that is what we found.  About 10 km on bitumen and a ferry ride and we were in rice paddies.

There were five of us and we biked about 40 km.  We rode into a wedding and people got bee stings.
